Mendelevium
 
[nach D. I. Mendelejew] das, -s, chemisches Symbol Md, künstlich hergestelltes, radioaktives chemisches Element aus der Reihe der Actinoide im Periodensystem der chemischen Elemente, eines der Transurane. Als erstes Isotop des Mendeleviums wurde 1955 von A. Ghiorso, G. T. Seaborg und Mitarbeitern das Nuklid 256Md bei der Einwirkung von Alphateilchen auf Atomkerne des Einsteiniumisotops 253Es entdeckt.
